Abstract: In this paper we present various characterizations of Benford variables together with a rich set of new examples. We emphasize the important role played by the mod 1 arithmetic in exploring the digit distribution of random variables. In addition, we investigate the rather surprising sum invariance property using real data such as the first 50,000 Fibonacci numbers, as well as a discretization of a Benford random variable.
