Abstract: As far back as 1881, it has been observed that in sets of certain data, the frequency of lower digits is much greater than the higher first digits. This follows a logarithmic relation and is commonly known as Benford's Law of the First Digit Law. This Law has been generalised to any number of significant digits as will be shown. There are many different ways to approach a theoretical explanation of this, and the three most widely accepted of these will be given. Since its popularisation by Benford, it has received many applications, some of which will be illustrated.
