Abstract: We present an explanation of Benford's law according to which under quite general assumptions the leading digits in collected numerical data from the real world does not emerge equally often but are distributed according to logarithmic low. After a short historical survey a mathematical formulation of the phenomenom is given and explained with the help of (simple) methods from Fourier analysis.
